SAE 40 HD monograde oil for classic gasoline and diesel engines with higher hot viscosity and a focus on robust legacy applications.
40 SAE HD is a monograde engine oil for classic engines that require a higher viscosity reserve at operating temperature. It is aimed at older gasoline and diesel engines as well as applications where robust hot viscosity and period-correct lubrication matter more than modern fuel economy behavior.
Especially with older technology or higher operating temperatures, SAE 40 can be the more suitable choice compared to thinner monogrades or modern multigrades. This applies to both vehicles and certain machines and units with historical specifications.
For these use cases, SAE 40 provides a clear, durable lubrication solution with a traditional focus.
Suitable for older gasoline and diesel engines as well as selected machinery where SAE 40, API CD/SF, Caterpillar Series 3 or comparable historical requirements are specified.
When is SAE 40 more suitable than SAE 30?
When the manufacturer specification or operating profile requires higher viscosity at operating temperature.
Is SAE 40 an oil for modern vehicles?
No, it is clearly intended for older technical applications.
Why do monograde oils like SAE 40 still exist?
Because many classic engines and machines are still designed specifically for such lubricants.
